David Louthan

Birth Date: 1981-11-18
Deceased Date: 2023-03-30
Obituary:
On Thursday, March 30, 2023, David Gene Louthan, loving son, brother, and uncle, passed away at the age of 41. David was born on November 18, 1981 in Elyria, Ohio to Margarita “Margie” and Douglas Louthan.

David is survived by his mother, Margarita Coleman; his stepfather, David Coleman; his father, Douglas Louthan; his stepmother, Freeda Louthan; his brothers: Paul (Hope) Louthan and Michael (Alyssa) Leal; nieces: Isabel and Aubrey Louthan; step-siblings; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins who are too numerous to name.

He graduated from Lexington High School in 2000. He attended The Ohio State University to pursue a mechanical engineering degree after high school. He would later attend North Central State College to pursue a degree in nursing.

David had a passion for animals, soccer, basketball, family, and friends.

He was known for his kind heart, quick wit, his bright smile, and compassion for anyone needing his help.

His love and kindness were on full display as he donated many hours of time assisting the State School for the Blind in Columbus, OH and caring for his late grandmother, Martha Garcia Carrion.

David was also an avid music lover of all old school rap music and hip-hop poetry.

Here is one of his favorite poems by the late artist Tupac Shakur.

In The Event Of My Demise, by Tupac Shakur

"In the event of my Demise
when my heart can beat no more
I Hope I Die For A Principle
or A Belief that I had Lived 4
I will die Before My Time
Because I feel the shadow's Depth
so much I wanted 2 accomplish
before I reached my Death
I have come 2 grips with the possibility
and wiped the last tear from My eyes
I Loved All who were Positive
In the event of my Demise"

David meant more to the people who love him than he ever completely understood. Those who love him find comfort that one day we will be reunited and remind him how much he meant to us all.

Joaquina Carrion

Birth Date: 1939-08-21
Deceased Date: 2023-02-10
Obituary:
Joaquina Carrión was born on August 21, 1939 to Hermógenes and Pilar Carrión in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico. Joaquina was the ninth of fourteen children. Hers was and is a very close-knit family, her parents, siblings, their families and their extended family. Her family came to live in Lorain, Ohio when Joaquina was about twelve or thirteen years old. At that time, Sacred Heart Chapel was a mission where our brothers, priests and sisters ministered together. She became very involved in the Cenacle and a member of the Missionary Cenacle Apostolate when she was fifteen in 1954. As Joaquina said, “The sisters invited me to be part of their team… It was a great experience. I was about 15 years old and I knew this work was very appealing to me.”

She wrote to Mother Sebastian when she was sixteen and said, “My chief purpose of writing this letter is to tell you a little about myself. I have always liked the way the sisters work and everything. I’ve always liked the vocation of Sisterhood. With all my heart, I would always want to be a sister. I’m sure that that is the best life anybody could have. I would like to enter the community next August if you will permit me to… I will pray for you, too. Will you please pray for me?”. She was very close to Sr. Marie Jean and Father Gerard. They thought very highly of Joaquina. She mentions many of the priests and sisters in her letters. Because Joaquina was very young she was encouraged to wait before entering, but she persisted, and entered our community on August 5, 1956. In the Novitiate, she received the name of Sr. Mary Gerard of the Crucifixion. She made her first profession on March 25, 1958 and her perpetual profession of vows on March 25, 1963.

Joaquina received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Puerto Rico in 1972 and a Masters in Social Work from Fordham University in 1974 with a concentration on community organizing. Joaquina had a wide educational experience culturally. She participated in many workshops, courses, conferences, and experiences in Latin America, such as El Salvador, Guatemala, Cuba, and Peru. She was part of a group that went to Cuba in 1989 as part of a delegation at the invitation of the Episcopal Conference of Cuba. It was the largest official delegation of Catholics to visit Cuba in 30 years.

Joaquina also served our MSBT community in many ways. She was appointed to the MSBT Endowment Board, elected to leadership as a General Councilor, and participated in various standing committees and ad hoc committees over the years.

Sr. Joaquina’s missionary life was full. Her first assignment was to our mission in Ponce, Puerto Rico from 1960 to 1966. Next, she was missioned to Long Island City, New York and then to the San Juan area working at Catholic Social Services in Roosevelt, Puerto Rico. During that time, she studied at the Catholic University Puerto Rico and after graduation she was assigned to Catholic Social Services in San Juan.

From 1972 to 1974, she studied at Fordham University and lived in our Cenacle in 80th Street. After graduation, Joaquina served in Catholic Social Services in New York until 1977.

1n 1977, She was missioned to Casa del Carmen, Hispanic Ministry, in Philadelphia. In 1979, she was missioned to Parish Social Ministry in Sacred Heart Parish in Lorain, Ohio, her home parish.

From 1982-85, along with her ministry at Catholic Social Services in Lorain, Joaquina became part of the team developing the Program for Lay Ministers and the permanent Diaconate for the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio. This program was in response to the spiritual, cultural and language needs of the 35,000 Hispanic Catholics in the Diocese. She was thrilled to be part of this effort because she saw the development and strengthening of the role of the laity as so integral to our charism.

In 1985, she was appointed as the Diocesan Coordinator of Hispanic Ministry for the Diocese of Cleveland. In requesting Sr. Joaquina for the this position, Bishop Pilla wrote to the General Councilor saying, “Sr. Joaquina emerges as the best qualified for the position. Her knowledge of the Diocese as well as her national and international contacts are invaluable. She would be the first Hispanic, as well as the first woman, to hold this position in the Diocese. It is anticipated that such an appointment would be most favorably received, especially by the Hispanic community.”

She was seen as a treasure to the Hispanic Community in Cleveland. In an article in the Diocesan publication, they wrote, “Like all wonderful gems, her brilliance and clarity shine through and brighten the lives of all those around her. Joaquina was elected to our General Council in 1998 and served until 2003 in that role. She then took a time of Sabbatical at Sangre de Cristo Center, which she found renewing.

From 2004 to 2018, she served as the Associate Protector of the Mission, and later as the General Protector of the Mission, of Los Centros Sor Isolina in Puerto Rico where the goal was to work collaboratively with the Centros’ staff and Board to ensure Mission Effectiveness. She saw the empowerment of the Laity as key in achieving that goal.

In 2010, Trinity College of Puerto Rico celebrated its seventeenth graduation and dedicated the graduation to Sister Joaquina for her commitment and dedication to this alternative to education for their youth and adult population and in gratitude for her support to the faculty and students. Joaquina understood from personal experience the challenges that students faced at times regarding their education. She often shared that her own educational struggle when she moved to the States. She was quoted as saying, ‘We must improve the quality of our children’s education. Without a good education the domino effect comes into play- low education leads to low employment leads to low self-worth can lead to violence, drugs, crime, etc.”

In the Fall of 2017 Sr. Joaquina felt it was time to come to the Motherhouse. It was the year of Hurricane Maria. She wanted to see the year through until June 30, 2018. Joaquina came to the Motherhouse to live in July 2018 and was missioned to the ministry of Prayer in 2020. In September of 2020, as she became weaker, Sister Joaquina was missioned to Mother Boniface Missionary Cenacle at Wesley.

When Sister Joaquina wrote to Mother Marie to request permission to take her Final Vows in 1963, she said, “ As I have prayed, I will continue praying that God give me all the necessary years to serve Him as I should. I hope to cooperate with these graces so that I may be a true Missionary Servant and daughter of Father Judge.”

We have been witnesses to Sister Joaquina’s life in community and mission and to the gift she was to her family, to the Cenacle Family and to the People of God. We are so grateful to the Triune God for Joaquina’s life as a Missionary Servant of the Most Blessed Trinity.

Obituary:
July 31st, 1928 - February 9th, 2008

Semblanza

The words of Father Kevin Nugent, M.S.Ss.T., on the occasion of the Mass and Funeral of Hermogenes Carrion.

June 29, 1968

The Gospel According to Saint John - Chapter 5

“My beloved: for everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” – We can undoubtedly apply these words to Don Hermogenes.

Today we celebrate the feast of the Apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul.  The Universal Church also ends its year of faith today.  It is very fitting for us that the feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is today, and it’s very meaningful that the Mass that we offer for our brother Hermogenes is regarding these two apostles whom he imitated so much.   And I say fitting because during his entire life he practiced the same faith for which these apostles died for.

Faith – this supernatural gift that we acquire through Baptism; that gives us the power to believe in the word of God, which gives us the strength to say:  I believe in the truths that God has given us.  For example:  the Holy Trinity, three people in one God; the Incarnation of the Son of God, made man in the bosom of the Virgin Mary,  - Redemption – This Son of God dying to redeem us from sin.  The seven Sacraments, conduits or sources of divine life for our souls, among them the Holiest of Sacraments – the Eucharist -  Christ offering himself in the Holy Mass – nourishing us in the Communion – waiting for us in the Sanctuary and saying to us:  “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” (Saint John - 54)

Another sacrament – penance – or in other words, the confession, through which we are able to confess and receive forgiveness for our sins – confessing to the Priest – a man with a special vocation, who has received this authority from Christ himself.  “Receive the Holy Spirit – If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.  I have mentioned these divine truths to you because in the life of our brother Hermogenes these were the most vital things.

Through the Sacrament of Baptism he received the mustard seed.  During his days of youth, through the example of his parents Melchor and Felipa; in the fields of San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico; Hermogenes witnessed a life of prayer and sacrifice.  This made his mustard seed grow and transform into a robust tree, which has been a shelter, not only for his family but for all of us who have experienced through this good brother a live portrait of Christ himself, whom he loved so much.

The evident proof we have of the love that Hermogenes had for Christ, is here with us in his family who is present here this morning.  Dona Pilar and Don Hermogenes procreated fourteen children.  His family, this is, his wife and children show us that our brother, notwithstanding today’s environment against having large families – gave the utmost importance to the words of our Principal Brother Christ: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you”.  These children belonging to Don Hermogenes and Dona Pilar, incorporated in Christ through baptism,  and strengthened throughout their life by the other sacraments and prayer are going to have the joy of being with their father in the presence of God…¡fourteen children!  ¿Could there be a more beautiful gift than giving these lives to God as an offering?

Allow me to mention a tremendous fact about the life of our brother and this is his devotion, his faithfulness, his love towards the Sisters, fellow believers and especially towards the Priests. We should all remember that Priests are people, human, with the same nature of all men and that we are to continuously work to grow in our friendship with Christ. So many times I heard him speak with reverent love about the Priests in his town of San Lorenzo!!  I could speak extensively about his loyalty as I recall that during the moments of crisis of our parish, when our Priests were affected by criticism; our faithful Hermogenes – like David against Goliath – would stand up and defend the Priests in such an eloquent way that everyone, once he was done, would remain convinced of his words.

Father Tomas Agustin Judge has told us that the supernatural man is guided by faith, therefore he uses things that are temporary to obtain those that are eternal. Our brother Hermogenes without much schooling possessed divine wisdom.  His life of prayer, of meditation, of contemplation put him in touch with Christ and Christ himself illuminated his intelligence and gave him the strength to follow his example – in other words – the example of Christ.

During his entire life Don Hermogenes drank from the water that Christ spoke about to the Samaritan woman when he said:  “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (John 3 – 10)

Our brother in faith, Hermogenes, has already received his award.  He, who for so many years was a pilgrim – a stranger to this world, like Saint Paul has told us, who has walked for Christ, towards the Father driven by the Holy Spirit, with the help of Mary and all of the Saints, is right now in the presence of the Celestial Court.

I am certain that if he had written a letter during his last days of life on this earth, he would have written it like this:

Dear family – Pilar and children –

Please forgive any upsets that I may have caused you. I give thanks to God for the years I have spent amongst you.  I ask that you practice your faith with all your strength; that you give your children the same example that I received from my parents and that Pilar and I have tried to give all of you. I bestow upon all of you my paternal blessing.

And to my brothers in Christ from the Capilla del Sagrado Corazon I also ask you to forgive me for any wrongdoing that I may have done to you.  I recommend that, as the fathers and mothers of your families, you put in first place the extension of the Kingdom of Christ.  Participate in the Holy Mass as frequently as possible remembering the words that we have heard so many times:

“Mass is the great encounter between God our Savior and the saved man through Christ, Priest of the new alliance.  Collect the sacrifices of this day, the sins of your people, the wants of your family, the desires of Humanity as a whole, and LIVE YOUR MASS.”

I trust in the Holy Heart of Jesus and in our Lady of the Rosary that I will see you in heaven.

In Christ,

Hermogenes Carrion

Post-script.

Other words that have given me a lot of strength in these last days are:  “Christ and I are an overwhelming majority”.

Andres Solis, named Lorain's Hispanic of the Year in 1984, died in a hospital in Dearborn Michigan, yesterday. Solis, 52, was in Dearborn helping to plan Ford's Motor Co. project of building a plant in Hermosillo, Mexico. A Ford spokesman said Solis was taken to Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, Monday, after complaining of chest pains.

In Lorain, Solis was active in the Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue. He held leadership positions in the parish council, served on the board of directors and was chairman of the committee that plans the church's annual festival. "That really gives me satisfaction," he said in an interview last year.

He was instrumental in getting Sacred Heart Manor Apartments built several years ago. The apartments serve as housing for the elderly. He also led the board of directors of the Sacred Heart Community Corp. which oversees the operation of the apartments.

"He was a tremendous leader," said Eugene Rivera, a friend of Solis and former director of El Centro.  "He was the type of person who worked in the community through the church. This is a tremendous loss to our commnity. People like Andres, unfortunately, are not common in our society. Not only was he a leader, he was a teacher by the example he set. But he has also left a legacy behind in terms of what he taught the community by his example.

Carmen Melendez, Sacred Heart's parish secretary, said Solis was dedicated to getting the apartments built. "It entailed many, many long hours and many sleepless nights, I'm sure," she said.

Although Solis had been working in Michigan, he returned to Lorain every weekend and attended Sunday Mass, Ms. Melendez said. "He was very dear to us here and very much loved," she said. "He was always willing to give of himself."

Rocky Ortiz, director of El Centro, said Soli's work on the parish council and for the apartments is immeasureable. "I believe through his dedication and work, these things became reality," Ortiz said. "People like him are the ones who took the extra mile."

Solis, born in Silao, Mexico, moved to Lorain in 1951. He worked for U.S. Steel for four years before being laid off in 1961. After that he worked for a small camera shop in downtown Lorain where he did some work for Ford Motor Co. and he was later hired by the automaker.

He began on the production line, working his way through the ranks before becoming a process engineer in 1970. He began working in Ford's body and assembly headquarters in Dearborn early this year to assist in planning the Mexican plant.

He is survived by his wife, Felisa, and four children, Teresa of Inkster, Mich.; Benjamin of Cleveland; Margarita of Akron and Celina at home.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the John J. Gluvna Funeral Chapel, Lorain.
